Rabbi Schumeister

Teacher, confidant, mentor and theologian, Rabbi Schumeister bridges all generations with his understanding, warmth and caring approach. His love of Judaism and the Jewish community as a whole is evident in everything he does. Whether he is singing while dancing with the Torah on Simchat Torah, leading a session in his adult education series, or quietly inquiring on the health and well being of family members, he is truly a jewel that shines brightly within the Hackensack Jewish Community. Often nicknamed “The Jewish Community’s Best Kept Secret,” Rabbi Schumeister’s Divrei Torah on Shabbat and holidays are always deeply religious and historically based but never loses sight of the relevance in today’s modern world.

Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, Rabbi Schumeister was an active participant in United Synagogue Youth and valedictorian of his high school class. He majored in Hebrew at the University of Minnesota and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, he received the prestigious Masliansky Prize on Homiletic. After being hired by Temple Beth El in 1980, he continued his studies at New York University receiving a master’s degree in Near Eastern Languages and Literature.

Rabbi Schumeister and his wife Roberta are the proud parents of three sons.
